We finished studying Genesis 18:  We explored the dynamics of prayer by studying Abraham's interactions with God in angelic form regarding the fate of Sodom. The discussion covered various aspects of prayer, including the difference between bargaining and presenting arguments to God, the importance of persistent prayer, and how to approach prayer requests when not immediately answered. The session concluded with teachings on tithing as a test of faith and the importance of regular Bible study and spiritual engagement in developing a strong faith that can better discern God's responses to prayers.

1/21/2025
We studied how a “day” in Genesis 1 means a solar day or 24 hours.
Summary of argument: “Why a Day is a Day in Genesis 1”
The Old Testament use of the word Hebrew Word “Yom”
  1. Biblical use of the word “day” used in single form (versus plural) with a number conveys a specific period of time.
  2. Biblical use of the word “day” used with the words “morning” and “evening” and a number conveys a solar day.
  3. Biblical use of the word “day” in plural form usually conveys longer periods of time, beyond a solar day.
  4. There are no biblical examples where the construction of “evening”, “morning” with a number conveys long periods of time like “eras”, “periods” or “ages.” Other words and constructions are used to convey this idea.
  5. Other words in Hebrew to covey “time” could have been used in Genesis 1. Of the 13 words, 11 refer to long periods of time.
  6. Moses’ use of “day” in single form and not using words to convey an event that happened a very long time ago suggests that he was recounting an event that did not happen that far in the past. He could have used other words to convey an event that happened in “ancient” times. Also various words combinations would have been used to convey a continuing creation process that happened over a longer period time. See Exodus 20:8-11
  7. The creation account in Genesis defines the very origins of persons, animals, places, and things on Earth (light, dark, land, water, plants, etc) and of all creation (sun, moon, stars) including concepts like “good”, “evil”, “life” and “time.” So to introduce time using the word “day” and then define it by “morning” and “evening” with a specific number attached to it so that it would be interpreted as vague or longer period of time goes against the sense of the text and one of the purposes of conveying the creation account. The terms used in Genesis 1 and 2 convey the very definition of reality.
  8. The final argument for allowing Yom (Day) to be defined the way it is in Genesis is that we don't allow outside sources to redefine what the Bible clearly conveys. Otherwise we will forever be changing Scripture to suit the thinking of the time. Defining days in Genesis 1 as solar days is a great example of allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture, instead of outside source (i.e. science, philosophy, personal feelings, even human reasoning) to drive the interpretation of Scripture.

Why would Jesus tell His Disciples not to tell people who He was? (Seems anti-evangelist) And what does it mean to “pick up your cross” to follow Jesus? And why would Jesus look at his beloved Disciple, Peter and say “Get behind me, Satan.” And what do these issues have to do with you and your everyday life?

The answers to these questions and more will be revealed. We pick up from Matthew 16:20.

Last Tuesday’s (03/7/2023) Bible Study on Matthew 15:1-9. Where can tradition in the Church supersede the Word of God? Do we need an altar, or pulpit, or liturgy in worship? What about men not wearing hats? Often, we mix up what God commands in Scripture versus what are traditions in the Church. Is our liturgy commanded? Are we required to celebrate Easter? Do we need an altar in our Sanctuary? Do we need to sing hymns?
